Understand the concepts of safety and health

Recognise the factors that influence health, safety and welfare

Apply the principles and procedures of health and safety to the workplace

Understand the importance of hazard identification and risk assessment

Promote the importance of hazard identification and risk assessment

Promote safe working practices and procedures

Be familiar with core legislation in the area of safety, health and welfare.

Learners should be able to:

Describe the duties of employers and employee as specified in t sections 6, 9, 12, and 13

of the Safety, Health and welfare at Work Act, 1989

Outline the role of the Health and Safety Authority

Describe the role of communication and training in the promotion and provision of

health and safety in the workplace

Identify the elements and functions of the safety statement

Promote safe and healthy working practices in relation to:

  • Oneself
  • Others
  • The workplace

Identify risk factors in relation to safety, to include:

  • Hazards
  • Work environments
  • Work practices
  • Effects of medication, drink and drugs

List the factors which contribute to safe and healthy working environments

Outline the principles and procedures of good housekeeping in the workplace

Use safe lifting and handling techniques where appropriate

Explain the following in relation to accidents and dangerous occurrences:

  • Causes
  • Prevention
  • Emergency procedures
  • Reporting and recording

Explain the following fire-related issues:

  • The fire triangle
  • Causes
  • Prevention
  • Emergency procedures
  • Fire equipment

Outline the specific hazards when working with equipment, to include:

  • Mechanical equipment
  • Electrical equipment

Outline how personal protective and respiratory equipment is used in the workplace

Outline the procedures for use and disposal of hazardous materials and waste in

the workplace e.g. MSDS

Describe the control and associated risks of the following in the workplace;

  • Noise
  • Sound
  • Fumes
  • Dust
  • Factors appropriate to working environments in the chose vocational area

Interpret a range of safety signs in the workplace

Identify factors which contribute to good health

Outline the risk factors in relation to health, to include:

  • Stress
  • Lifestyle
  • diet
  • Illness

Outline the role of exercise in the promotion of health

Describe the contents of a typical first aid kit and their appropriate use

State the reporting procedures for absence in the workplace

Identify the following in relation to infection control

  • Conditions for the growth and development of micro-organisms
  • Routes of infection
  • Symptoms
  • Ill-health
  • Preventative measures
  • Emergency procedures for suspected contamination

Describe the elements of a balanced diet.
