Course Content:

Learners should be able to:
• Describe the development of nursing as a profession
• Identify the structures of the healthcare profession in Ireland
• State the functions of each structure
• Outline the effects of European Union directives on nursing
• Identify the members of the primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare teams
• State the functions of the primary, secondary and tertiary health care teams
• Name the specialties within the health care profession
• Describe the Stages of the Nursing Process.
• Relate Each Stage of the Nursing Process to Patient Care.
• Outline the ‘Code of Practice’ for Nurses.
• List the activities of daily living
• Describe how to assist a patient in any of the activities of daily living
• Describe Empathic Behaviour of the Care Worker.
• Discuss the use of the senses in observation
• Demonstrate safe lifting techniques
• List commonly occurring infections
• Name the organisms which cause these infections
• Describe the modes of transmission of these organisms
• Describe the effects of each infection
• Outline how to prevent infection and cross infection
• Explain terminology relating to drugs/medicines
• Explain common nursing terminology and medical abbreviations
• Explain the importance of precision in administering Drugs and recording the procedure.
• Measure and record accurately temperature, respiration, blood pressure and fluid balance.

Skills Demonstration 50%

In one or more skills demonstrations, candidates will be observed carrying out the following tasks:
1.    Measurement and recording of temperature
2.    Measurement and recording of pulse
3.    Measurement and recording of respiration
4.    Measurement and recording blood pressure
5.    Measurement and recording of fluid balance
